HIGHLIGHTS

Mount Damavand 5671 meter, a dormant volcano, located in middle Alborz Range with 5671m elevation is the highest point in Iran (Persia) and is the highest peak in Middle East. The mountain is located near the southern coast of the Caspian Sea, 66 km northeast of Tehran. It is clearly visible from Tehran. The nearest major town to Mount Damavand is city of Larijan, famous for its hot springs. It is Asia’s highest volcano and therefore one of the Volcanic Seven Summits.

There are several routes to the summit which have different difficulties. Some of them are very dangerous and need rock and ice climbing gears. Four of them are better known: Southern route, northern route, North-eastern route and Western route. The most popular route is the Southern Route which has a shelter or mountain hut midway at 4200 meter known by Bargah-e sevom. There are 3 known glaciers in Damavand by the name of: Yakhar, Siyoleh, Dubisel. The best season for ascending the peak is June to September. In this season weather condition is usually stable, though there could be snowfall even in mid-summer.
